Numerology glossary
Numerology has a small vocabulary and a large amount of disagreement about it. These are the terms as this site uses them — short definitions, no mysticism in the wording, and a link from each one to the page that treats it properly.
- Angel numberAlso called Repeating number
- A repeating or patterned sequence — 111, 444, 1212 — noticed often enough that it starts to feel addressed to you. Angel numbers sit outside the chart proper: they are read from what you happen to see rather than calculated from anything about you, which makes them the least systematic part of the tradition.Angel numbers →
- Birth nameAlso called Full name at birth
- The complete name first recorded for you, middle names included, in its original spelling. Three of the six core numbers are calculated from it. Because names change, practitioners often read the birth name as the chart you were given and a current name as the one you are living in.Which name to use →
- Birthday number
- The day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit — the 23rd gives 5, and days 1 to 9 need no arithmetic at all. The simplest number in the chart, and — like the Life Path — untouched by the arguments about spelling that the three name numbers attract. - Chaldean system
- The main alternative to the Pythagorean letter table. It assigns letters by sound rather than alphabetical position, uses only the values 1 to 8, and reads the two-digit compound total as well as the reduced digit. - Challenge number
- Calculated by subtracting the reduced parts of a birth date from one another rather than adding them. Each challenge pairs with a pinnacle and describes the friction of that period. A challenge of 0 is read not as nothing but as the widest possible field, which is its own difficulty.Pinnacles & challenges →
- Core numbers
- The six figures a full reading rests on: Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday and Maturity. - Digit sum
- The result of adding the individual digits of a number: the digit sum of 1990 is 19. Reduction is just the digit sum applied over and over until one digit is left. The two terms are often used interchangeably, though strictly a digit sum is a single pass.Rule one: reduction →
- Expression numberAlso called Destiny number
- Calculated from every letter of the full birth name. Read as the range of abilities you have to work with — what you are equipped to express, rather than what you want. It is the number most likely to change over a lifetime, because it is built from the one input that can legally be altered.Expression calculator →
- Karmic debt
- A total of 13, 14, 16 or 19 reached at any step before the final reduction. It does not change the resulting digit — a 16 still reduces to 7 — but the tradition reads the route as carrying an extra theme. It is invisible unless you keep the intermediate totals.Karmic debt numbers →
- Karmic lesson
- A digit from 1 to 9 that no letter of your birth name carries. Read as a capacity the name does not supply by default, and so one you tend to build deliberately rather than inherit. Frequently confused with karmic debt, which is about totals rather than absences.Karmic lessons calculator →
- Life Path number
- Calculated from the date of birth by reducing month, day and year separately, then adding and reducing again. Usually taken as the through-line of a chart — the direction a life keeps returning to. It is the number most readings lead with, and the only one no spelling dispute can touch.Life Path calculator →
- Master number
- 11, 22 and 33 — the three totals held rather than reduced to 2, 4 and 6. Each is read as the theme of the digit beneath it at a more demanding setting: more to work with, and more to reconcile. A master number is not a rank, and it predicts nothing.Master numbers →
- Maturity number
- The Life Path added to the Expression, then reduced. It combines the date half of the chart with the name half, and is traditionally read as a theme that surfaces later — once the other numbers have been lived with rather than merely described.How the Maturity number is worked out →
- Personal year, month and day
- Cycle numbers rather than identity numbers. The personal year adds your birth month and day to the year in question; the personal month adds the calendar month to that figure, and the personal day adds the calendar day to the personal month. - Personality number
- Calculated from the consonants of the full birth name. Read as the impression you make before you are known — the part of you people meet first. Its total plus the Soul Urge total always equals the Expression total, which makes it a useful check on your arithmetic.Personality calculator →
- Pinnacle
- One of four life periods derived from the birth date, each with its own number and its own span of years. Together they cover a whole life without gaps or overlaps, and each pinnacle is paired with a challenge number describing the friction of the same stretch.Pinnacles & challenges →
- Pythagorean system
- The letter table used throughout this site: A to I take 1 to 9, J to R repeat them, S to Z run 1 to 8. The attribution to Pythagoras is traditional rather than documented — the system as practised today was assembled in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.Our method →Pythagorean vs Chaldean →
- Reduction
- Adding the digits of a total repeatedly until a single digit remains: 1990 becomes 19, then 10, then 1. It is the operation almost every number in numerology ends with. The one exception is a master number, which stops the reduction where it stands.Rule one: reduction →
- Soul Urge numberAlso called Heart's Desire
- Calculated from the vowels of the full birth name. Read as inner motivation — what you are drawn toward when nothing is being asked of you. Because vowel counts are small, it is the number most sensitive to a single difference in spelling, and to how you treat the letter Y.Soul Urge calculator →
- Triad
- One of the three groups the digits 1 to 9 fall into: the independent triad 1·5·7, the practical triad 2·4·8 and the expressive triad 3·6·9. Used to explain why some numbers get on easily and others read each other as obstacles. A convenient grouping rather than a rule the arithmetic knows about.Life Path pairings →
- Twin flame
- A modern idea, borrowed into numerology from elsewhere, describing an intense mirroring relationship rather than a compatible one. It is not calculated from anything and no number produces it. - Y rule
- The convention deciding whether Y counts as a vowel or a consonant, which changes both the Soul Urge and the Personality. Ours is positional: Y is a vowel unless it sits directly beside a, e, i, o or u. That is a heuristic about spelling, not a claim about pronunciation.The Y rule, worked through →
